Discovery Topics

What is your initial topic of discovery, and why are you interested in this topic? What might be your first exploratory question?

If you've not settled yet upon one topic to discover, perhaps you're considering two or three topics. What are they?

  1. A week ago my father asked me if I knew what nanotechnology was and I had no response. With an engineering background, I figured it was something that had to do with microscopic technology. Nano is the SI prefix meaning 10^9, so I figured it had to be something small. I took 10 minutes to look it up on wikipedia and I was shocked with the information I found.

It sounded impossible and very abstract to me that with this technology they are going to build cars, using nanomaterial, that weight around total 300 pounds or less. Another interesting thing I heard that will be possible with this technology is nanorobots, in the field of nanomedicine, that are smaller than red blood cells and can enter the body through an injection.

Like many that are reading this are wondering, how is it possible? How is definiately going to be one of the first questions I am going to explore and discover.

  2. I am interested in the removal of softball and baseball from the olympics. I obviously want to learn more about this because I play softball. I know the main reason they removed them from the olympics is because they were beating every team they played every year, and it was no surprise that USA would always be the champions. I want to know what the underlying issues are with this. Is it because we would lose viewers or money? This is my thought.

  3. In class when we were talking about criteria for topics, a topic suddenly came to me. I love listening to music, preferably Hip Hop. One of the hottest artist now is Lil Wayne. There is all this talk of a purple drink, or sizzurp. The purple drink contains promethazine coedine, which is also is cough syrup. There is such hype about this drink that I want to know what it does to your body. There are pros and cons to this and I am interested in knowing what they are. Why is this drink so different from a regular alcohol buzz or a marijuana high?

  4. Jenny and Humood both have interesting topics, particularly because these topics interest them. Recall that your discovery topic should truly be something you want to learn about.

Where they'll both go to find answers to their initial questions will be interesting. The FIU Library will be really important during each of your discoveries.

Organizing a discovery essay is not tough at all because each paragraph should basically explore a new sub-topic, and each new sub-topic will stem from you new exploratory question. I've found, however, that the toughest part of this assignment is determining which question to ask. There is really is no limit as to what you may ask; just be sure that your question is sincere, meaningful, and truly meant to discover something new about your overall topic.

  5. Manny can certainly discover a number of things about "sizzurp." What are the effects? How prevalent is it in our urban culture? What type of punishment does possession of this drug carry? Is it a federal crime? If illegal possession of this drug is more of a local or state crime, will it soon become a federal crime?

Many actions become punishable by law only after they have been tried in the infamous court of public opinion. How has the media effected/affected our collective perception of this drug?

  6. Technology is crazy, some dudes have been turning nano grams into softball's for years. Manny if you get a chance study DJ Screw and Pimp C. They both overdosed on "sizzub", and were key figures in the chopped and screwed movement.

A few months ago I started taking photos around campus to document my sneaker collection. Friends tell me the shots are dope and I should create a catalogue to exhibit the pics. I love art, but I don't know anything about the business. How do I put a price tag on a picture? What's the best way to gain exposure? Is there an audience for my type of photograph's?

  7. On real world this there was a cast member who began to cut herself after an awful fight with her roomates. Some of the roomates involved in the fight accused her of doing it for attention. That she wasn't really a cutter because she didn't cut herself "intensely", therefore she didn't want to commit suicide. On the after show, a therapist called those roomates ignorant, that not all cutter want to commit suicide and that self mutilation is never for attention. But when the other roomate said that even though i didnt agree, i did believe that maybe self mutilation is always caused from lack of attention.

I want to research if self mutilation comes from need of attention?

  8. I grew up in a Jewish-based community. There's synagogues and temples on almost every block where I currently live. I never really understood the Hasidic religion, which is Jewish-based. I have heard of rumors and typical stereotypes for Jewish people, like they are greedy, rich, snobby, etc. There's also the stereotype that they own bakeries and law firms, but I never really took the time to understand their culture and lifestyle.

So for this discovery paper, I'm going to go into the lives of Hasidic women in my community. I want to find out about the conflicts and struggles of being a woman in such a conservative community. I already interviewed two women and did some basic research; for example, I found out that there is a high suicide rate within the women in Jewish communities.

  9. Tiffany, that last bit of information is certainly surprising, at least to me. I suppose the next possible question you may ask is simply "Why?" Suicide is probably not alien to any community, but perhaps exploring why the rate is higher than the average suicide rate in America (?) may uncover some relevant or concrete information.

Im leaning more on the discovery of "Cults" but im not sure which questions to ask in order to be able to elaborate more on them.

  12. For my Discovery Essay I was thinking of looking into cap and trade. I was watching Real Time with Bill Maher when I heard of it. It's sopose to be a plan to help the fight agains't global warming, but yet questions arised when i thought about it. Questions such as: How/why it will help? Who will guide the program? Hopefully I will better understand this subject after i am done.

  13. The topic of my discovery essay is Greek Life. With so much negativity surrounding theses organizations, I am curious as to why so many students contine to join year after year. what is the true function and purpose of a Greek letter organization? I never used to care about them until I one- started college and two- had people that I know personally (who have no need to buy friends) either pledge to one or show interest in joining one. Now I want to know when did they come about, and for what reason.

  14. I am doing my essay on the recent cancellation of the F-22 program by the government. This subject is of great interest because I have always followed the F-22's development. I'd like to know why the government cancelled the program and what that means to our national defense.

I want to know if there can be answer to this problem. I am interested in this topic because I am concerned about traveling so far for school. The Fall season is going to start and I will be traveling 5 days for school. I do bnot have money for boarding. What is the meaning of being economical?

  16. i love shakespeare and all of his plays, especially hamlet. the reason this play is one of my favorites is because of the different interpreations it can have.

one of the main questions one asks him or herself while reading hamlet is "is hamlet really crazy or is he simply pretending?" i find this question to be a very difficult one to answer, thats why i chose this as my topic.

  18. im still juggling topics but over the weekend began to write on all them hoping to widdle it down. I want to either write about the death peanalty of getting stoned to death. Intrested in how a society can give so much power to the male. Also 9/11 but i feel like i am just comparing conspiracies rather then discovering the actual event. Aslo i am intrested in the americanizing of architecture in other countires around the world. Discovering why tradition or culture is lost in these new developments

  19. I have been pondering a topic for a few days now and I couldn't come up with anything other than cars and military. Two topics that always interest me and that I'd like to think I know quite a bit about.

I think I'm going with cars:
While I know a bit about cars there are some things in the car world that are left up to opinion. ie. Muscle vs. Import, Turbo vs. Supercharger, Expensive cars like mercedez-benz vs. cheap alternatives that can be made faster and more luxurious like a 3000gt..

those are my possibilities and I will narrow it down later. I plan on researching the one, if not all of them to find out why people choose one over the other.

Only problem I have is there is certain car jargin that the average person might not understand so I am wondering if I should write it like it was my thoughts or explain certain things so they make sense to others.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

  20. In class we were talking about different forms of drugs and from there I went into hallucinogenics. Hallucinogenic drugs have always interested me. What exactly happens in these fugi that cause the human brain to completely lose touch with reality? It is something that makes your brain process things too fast for you to realize what you're even thinking.

LSD to psilocybin to mescaline to PCP. So many different types of "highs" or "trips" with so many different downfalls. Also so many different laws that hold them back from being completely explored. Opening and closing doors in the mind. The feeling that the mind has just been sprayed across a wall.

"Reality is its best when it starts falling apart."

How are they made? Where do they come from?

  21. a little late :/

I know I want my discovery paper to be on religion. I'm not 100% sure what aspect but I was thinking of doing some research on why religion is still so influential today and why it still manages to play such a large role in our society, such as influencing our laws still. I feel like some religions are somewhat outdated, especially with all the science and technology out there now.
I know that this isn't something I am going to find an exact answer to but I think I can form a better understanding on the topic.

  22. i have of friends that do drugs. i have realized that the most popular drug is exctasy. At the same time, i have always refused to do it but have always wanted to know the reason why my friends chose to do it even though they know the harmful effects that drugs have. from my perspective, we were born sober and i dont think we need any type of drugs in our lives. So i really want to find out why some of my friends do drugs, almost every week; even though i tirelessly try to stop them and warn them about the consequences

  23. my topics are probably going to be about politics. The current issues of today and how not just the U.S is going through a recseeion but how other countries are feeling too. Like it is a domino effect. I dont know yet but my passion is more law and political science and im trying to see at what angle im going to ask these questions.
